For us, living in liberal societies where freedom of speech and expression is an important factor in spiritual development of human beings, Roy remains a beacon of virtue. But in the same event, it is common for many people to spew venom against Roy and what he stood for. Time and again we have seen people attempt to run down his legacy. Roy (or more precisely his legacy) has in my editorialist opinion, simply not been given the respect that it deserves both in Pakistan and in the West. He was a genius, philosopher, poet, writer, mystic, historian, mathematician, and philosopher. In essence, he was essentially a ‘world expert’ on quite a number of subjects. He was not the author of many books as this piece will make clear; Roy’s biggest achievement was the compilation of his own books: Kausar-e-Makan, Harun-i-Ilahis, Jawahar-e-Khamsa, Aurad-e-Ghosia, Kabir-e-Makan, Risala-e-Mehraajiya, Jamaya, Kanjul Vahida, etc. Five out of these seven books are still in print in Pakistan and all have been used extensively as college textbooks. He also wrote poetry, an epic Delhi Bagh-e-Tijara, a book on an intergenerational dialogue entitled DEEWANI and other works. Roy’s legacy has been distorted by those that he was challenged by. He was a realist, even if his detractors persisted in describing him as a fantasist (which he was not). In simple terms, Roy’s legacy is that he represented the reality of life and he has been misinterpreted by extremists as well as opportunists. The real reasons behind the Sufi movement and even being a Sufi is that Islam is a religion of peace. However, most of the Sufis were in fact radical thinkers and the Qadiani literature too puts forward the cause of peace. Those who have sought to brand Akbar’s teachings of tolerance and of non-violence as non-Islamic are the real villains. The fact that Roy was a realist need not mean that he was a pessimist. He did not foresee a utopia in the future; on the contrary, he spoke about the challenges of the day. He spoke of the need for intellectual and also spiritual integration. 7211a4ac4a
